So, just found out today Alkaline Trio is releasing a new album in April, and has also set dates for a supporting tour. Having heard their new single, I Wanna Be A Warhol, several times by now, there are things to like and dislike about it.
Matt Skiba’s voice only gets better with time, and I hope he keeps at it for a long, long time. That’s just the thing too, ’cause Matt can’t seem to keep his shit together for more than 5 minutes. I came into his work on Heavens pretty late in the game, but quickly became a huge fan, and I was very happy with Matt Skiba and the Sekrets; what I didn’t like was how he fell apart during the Sekrets first live performance… it was bad… really bad. It’s something of a joke among fans of AK3, and in my opinion, a real bummer. I haven’t seen any tour dates for the Sekrets, and it appears to be dead in the water, much in the way Heavens imploded on itself. It would have been special and surely memorable to see Matt at his best, singing the songs from either of those solo albums. He is in fact, his own worse enemy.
Matt’s bend for darker lyrics that paint a vivid landscape, coupled with the way his voice has matured over the years, is what I really dig about the sound of of his solo work. I like how he has brought forth a new style of singing in the latest AK3 single, albeit the lyrics feel shackled to what AK3 has become since their previous two albums.
I feel Crimson was their masterpiece, and it’s a slippery slope when you start incorporating sprinkles of pop in your music. It’s been a slow and gradual transition to a more “marketable” sound (especially for younger teens), and the formula was just right with Crimson. Agony & Irony and This Addiction was where AK3 started loosing me. They just took it too far, and you could hear it in Matt’s and Dan’s voice.
However, having said all this, I feel good about the new single. It’s still a little juvenile at times, but it sounds like Matt is trying something new in his approach; being faithful and true to what his voice really wants to do, which is to call out in the darkness. I have everything crossed in hopes the rest of the album brings it home!
